Day 32 without “Uber-cable”

March 17th, 2008 | General

It’s been a whole month since we got rid of our $160/month Uber-cable package with HD, Premiums, and DVR from Charter. We now have 3MB Internet with BASIC cable which is about $45/month.

I cannot emphasize BASIC enough! 12 channels of goodness with the random public access show thrown in. Saving money is cool and all but doesn’t come without it’s sacrifices. No more HD and I’m sure I’ll be missing some UT games this Fall. Major problem, no more Ghost Hunters sitting there on the DVR saying “Play me, then forget about that shadow in the corner tonight when you’re trying to fall asleep.”

Well, this weekend I thought to check out Hulu again now that it’s Public. I have to say, it made my day. Especially after I did a search and found Ghost Hunters! But wait, it gets better! I found The Office and The Big Lebowski in all of their FREE glory!

So, it made me wonder, at what point can I get everything I used to get with Uber-cable via a On-Demand style website such as Hulu? At that point am I still paying $39/month for Internet? What if everybody watched TV this way? What would happen to the business model wrapped around $160/month cable packages with DVR hardware?

Now, if I could only find a solution for Live TV, HD, and a way to get it from my computer to my TV I’d be set.

  1. I am proud of you and Lynn for biting the bullet and cutting your cable bill. That took guts. I would give up eating before I gave up my DVR but since you don’t have any channels to record, it isn’t a problem for you. It would be wonderful if the general public could do something to lower the price of cable and the price of gas.

  2. I know you can get free HD over-the-air if your TV has an HD tuner built-in . . . most of the new units (after 2006) have it — now it all just depends on how far you are from the transmitter and how strong your antenna is.
